Recent air disasters like the Garuda plane crash in Indonesia are
expected to be examined at a Aviation Safety Conference starting in Canberra
today.
Indonesia's Directorate General of Civil Aviation will be one of the
international delegates who will speak at the two-day event.
Vice-chairman of the SafeSkies conference David Forsyth says the theme of the
conference is about making aviation safety management systems work.
"One of the ways in which the speakers hopefully will demonstrate that at the
conference is to use real life examples of how organisations and government and
safety regulators have learnt from previous accidents, and then applied those to
put in better safety systems into operation in those organisations," he
said.
Mr Forsyth says the Australian aviation industry will see a number of new
aircraft in the next year.
"The [Airbus] A380 is the most recent one to come here, we have Imbrerier
jets starting up at Virgin Blue and we'll have the Boeing 787 coming in with
Qantas and Jetstar within the next year or two," he said.
"All of those aircraft represent jumps in efficiency and also improvements in
safety and reliability of aircraft and their systems."
