Qantas accident investigated

Investigations continue into Qantas accident

Australian airline Qantas says it's waiting for the result of an investigation to see if oxygen masks were affected by last Friday's midair accident.

Several passengers reported malfunctioning masks, after a hole was blown in the fuselage of plane, which was flying to Melbourne from London.

The airline says it regularly inspects all oxygen masks in line with the manufacturer's instructions, and it will complete an inspection of oxygen bottles on all Qantas Boeing 747-400s by Friday.

Qantas says the inspection is being conducted as a precaution.

At a news conference in Manila, Australia's Transport Safety Bureau spokesman Neville Blyth says that there's no evidence at this stage that the accident was the result of a security breach.

"This is being treated as a safety investigation and until such time as any evidence comes to light that this was a security related event, the investigation will be conducted by the ATSB, the civil aviation authority of the Philllipines, as a standard safety investigation, in accordance with the requirements," he said.
