Investigators have finished sifting through the wreck of a fatal
plane crash near Elliot, 700 kilometres south of Darwin.
Three German tourists were killed when the Cessna light plane tried to make
an emergency landing on the Stuart Highway on Saturday, but crashed.
Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigators have spent two days
collecting evidence from the scene, trying to work out why the pilot had to
attempt an emergency landing.
The Deputy Director of Aviation Safety Investigation, Julian Walsh, says they
will look at the flight plan, the pilot's training and maintenance of the plane.
"Photographing and documenting the accident site looking at various marks on
the ground to try to confirm to ourselves how the actual accident sequence
happened," he said.
Northern Territory police say the plane will be removed from the scene as
soon as possible.
The Stuart Highway has now been completely reopened.
